I chose newborn photography as my specialty because of my love for babies, my own experiences with longing to hold my babies again, and because I love to be challenged. Newborns spend most of their day sleeping up until they are about 3 weeks old. Then they begin to open their eyes for more time and take in the world around them. However, when you spend a few hours handling a baby who just wants to sleep they aren’t as compliant. They fuss and cry looking to be soothed by mom. This is part of the challenge of newborn photography. The other part is knowing what looks good and how to take a cute picture. Sometimes each pose can take upwards of 10 minutes to pose, get the baby to relax, put on the finishing touches, and then take a few images at different angles. After that I move onto the next pose. People don’t always realize why a newborn session can take 3 hours – well, this is why. Very few babies have ever completely slept through an entire session.
So, when your sweet, tiny human begins to fuss and cry just know that this is normal. I often use my tricks to help them relax and sleep. Other times we will have mom do an extra feeding or snack. What I can say is, baby Teagan did a great job! At 8 days old she had a few moments of fuss because, well, I kept messing with her! Totally my fault (it always is!), but I don’t regret it. She gave me such sweet poses. And I love those sweet cheeks!
Another great reason why I love doing newborn photography are the families I get to meet. I love talking with new parents about their stories, about their new baby, about jobs and life and kids! Having a new baby in the house always changes the dynamics of your life. I am here to give you a treasure that in just a few short months and years you will long for this “simple” time again.
