There is something special about a Colorado pregnancy. First, who else can say they’re growing a human a mile above sea level? Second, having so many fun activities year round can really help keep you and your baby healthy. There is no more beautiful a place to have a baby, and they will grow proud to call themselves “native.” However, having a pregnancy at high altitude can carry its complications too. High altitude is generally defined as being above 5,000 feet (1,500 m). Denver obviously sits at 5,280 feet, give or take depending on which suburb you’re located.
One interesting about high altitude babies is that they tend to be smaller than average babies at sea level. Does this mean your baby will be small? Not necessarily. There are plenty of 9 or 10 pound babies being born in Denver. But if you have recently moved to the area and your doctor says you’re measuring small, it’s not cause for instant alarm! Just have your OB-GYN keep an eye on all things (as you should anyway!). Other things could be increased risk of pre-eclampsia, short term fetal heart rate issues, and some other risks. I am not a doctor, and as always regular check ups with your OB is the best way to stay up to date on the health of you and your baby.
Also, we all know pregnant women shouldn’t smoke or be around second-hand smoke. This is the same for marijuana. In Colorado, recreational pot is legal and may be possessed by individuals. It is illegal to openly smoke or consume weed in public. If you are out-and-about and find yourself subject to smoke you are welcome to ask that person to “get a room”…in their own home. Never be afraid to protect the level of oxygen you and your baby need! Generally, most Coloradoans understand this and do obey marijuana ordinances.
So what kind of things can pregnant women do in Colorado? From spas, to brunch, where to kill some time, to live jazz, I found this list of things in Denver that are available to you for fun and relaxation! And if you are a visitor here, might I recommend a beautiful maternity session outdoors to capture the breathtaking views our state has to offer! So go ahead and explore this great state, or just sit back and relax for a much-deserved spa day. As hard as it may feel, relish these glorious days of being pregnant!
If you’re considering a session you happen to be in the right place to view my maternity session information. This latest session I had in my studio of this gorgeous mamma-to-be. You can tell she is glowing in the photos (I did not edit that in!), and is anxiously awaiting her little one in the next few weeks.
